I suffered from Interstitial Cystitis horribly for 2 years. If you Google it, 99% of websites will tell you it’s incurable. These websites are based on the Western medicine model – give symptoms a label having done some procedures, and prescribe someone a pill to manage the symptoms the best they can.
This is the model of medicine I followed as a patient, until I got IC. It’s the only model of medicine I was really aware of – I mean I’d go down to my local doctor, or go and see a consultant for something, and that’s the type of medicine I was exposed to.
If you think about it from a logical perspective, if you go down to your doctor or to a consultant with IC symptoms, they don’t try and answer the question as to why you’re having symptoms. Western medicine isn’t really concerned with the why – and I’m not sure why that is! Maybe we’re too ingrained with the pharmaceutical industry, which relies on prescriptions being written for symptom management. Maybe we all just want to feel better ASAP, and feel that a pill is the best chance of doing that. We take an antibiotic, the infection may go. But are we addressing why we got the infection? What’s our gut health like? What’s our immune system doing…
Those that have gone on to recover from IC have mostly seen either a Functional or Integrative Medical Doctor or a Naturopath. A Functional/Integrative Medical Doctor will actively seek to find the root cause of unexplained illnesses – they’re like medical investigators. Thinking this way is how I discovered the main root cause of my IC, hormone imbalance. No consultant ever mentioned that to me, some denied it had anything to do with IC at all, and it’s what got me 70% better from an “incurable” condition.
So – this section of the site is all about root causes of IC – take a look at the resource library and you’ll find heaps of published data on the various root causes I’ve come across. Yes, there are many – please don’t let this scare you. I found it comforting, that there are actual reasons for this kind of pain, that it isn’t “in your head”!
Please check out the Healing Interstitial Cystitis Naturally Facebook page (it is a closed, private group – what you post there can’t be seen on your own Facebook feed) – this is the only online IC resource I use. They foster a positive atmosphere there, so if you’re feeling blue about your IC, pop over and say hi. You can get better, and that group is all about healing your IC. I can’t recommend it enough 🙂
